One notable landscape trend we have observed over the past decade is the increasing demand for screening solutions. Many homeowners are opting to screen their pools, patios, outdoor kitchens, and fire pits to enhance comfort and privacy. Some seek screens to shield themselves from the view of neighbors, especially those living downhill from a two-story deck. In Nebraska, a common necessity for screening is to provide a barrier against wind and snow - hello acreage owners.A frequent request among clients is for trees that serve as "instant" screens. Given that the average duration of residence in a home is between eight to thirteen years, waiting 10-12 years for a tree to reach the screening size may not be practical. This is where tree spading becomes valuable, allowing for the relocation of larger trees.This image features our bobcat-mounted spade, which is utilized for digging and balling (B&B) trees in preparation for fall planting. Trees dug with the smaller spade can start out at 8-10 feet for evergreens and 15-20 feet for shade trees, depending on the variety, all while showcasing a pleasing branching structure. These trees have been cultivated in our field for several years and are now being transitioned to their final growing locations. We are back in the field! We are grateful for both the rain and the sunshine. Here is a hole created by our bobcat-mounted tree spade, which is an effective method for relocating large trees into smaller areas. This particular spade is primarily utilized on acreages for moving trees within an owner's property, as well as for our own balled and burlap (B&B) trees.These B&B trees are harvested in early spring and late fall. Depending on the size of the root ball, they can be transferred into landscapes using a balling cart or a small skid steer. Our Nebraska field-grown trees experience reduced transplant shock, as we typically move them from one soil condition to a similar one during their dormant to semi-dormant seasons. These trees have demonstrated resilience against our winters, the freeze-thaw cycles in spring and fall, and the heat of summer.If you are considering planting a tree this fall, it is not too late! Tree Spading 🍁Alright folks, it’s showtime! The stage is set, the utilities are all in their rightful spots, the tree of choice is picked, and the frosty magic is complete—now let’s get planting! First up, the tree spade rolls up to your abode to dig out the “plug”—that hefty dirt ball that’s off to the farm for a dirt party. Then, our spade maestro will scoop up the tree and drive it straight to your landscape. With a little finesse, they’ll back into the freshly dug hole and plop that beauty right in its new digs! Ta-da! You’ve got yourself a tree!aNow, let’s give that tree a proper welcome! There’ll be a small gap between the hole and your new leafy friend that needs some TLC with soil and water. Grab some fine, loose topsoil or compost and let’s fill that space! Start with a hose running full blast into the gap, then channel your inner gardener with a shovel! You might need about a yard of soil to make this happen. Keep that water flowing to help settle the soil around your tree. This is super crucial in fall when the air gets frosty; we don’t want those roots feeling neglected! In the first five watering sessions, plan to pour in a whopping 100-300 gallons of water. This will hydrate your spaded tree and help the loose soil snug up to the rootball. The bond between the rootball and the existing soil is key to preventing transplant shock and nurturing a healthy tree. Water weekly unless Mother Nature blesses us with a good inch of rain. Remember, these are “new” trees that need a little extra love! For every inch of trunk diameter, expect a year to establish its roots. Keeping up with a proper maintenance plan for the first three years is the secret sauce to success! We hope you had a blast on the tree spade tour! Crabapples, serviceberries, red & whitebuds, or dogwoods are your go-tos! And if you’re on a mission to feed the local critters, don’t forget about those fabulous white, bur, and red oaks! We definitely want to find the right tree for the right space.Once you’ve settled on your tree buddy, hold your horses until we hit that hard freeze—mid-twenties or lower, baby! That’s when the trees go into snooze mode, making it prime planting time. But before you call in the tree spade brigade, double-check your utilities! Scope out the route for the spade truck—don’t forget to look up for those low-hanging utility lines or branches ready to throw shade!
