We use mulch as both a function of protecting our landscapes and providing subtle beauty around plantings. Mulch will protect the roots by insulating the soil from major temp fluctuations and reduce water-loss from the soil. Medium texture (double ground) is best and bulk is better than bagged. The finer the mulch the quicker it will break down, however, it also does a better job of staying in place & weed control. When mulch breaks down, the organic material is beneficial to the soil and plants. Did you know that every time you mow and brush against evergreen foliage, it can stunt the growth of the tree? It’s not necessary to mulch every year, you may just need to touch-up areas where you can see the dirt.
For new mulch in a bed, 3-4″ depth is best. Keep mulch away from the base of plants and trees (avoid the mulch looking like a “volcano”) to make sure the crown of the plant can “breathe”. When mulch is piled up around the base of a plant, shrub or tree it can hold moisture within the stem or trunk and encourage diseases and insect problems. When topdressing existing beds, make sure you loosen the existing mulch. You may need to remove some of the existing mulch to maintain a 4″ depth. Apply mulch 3-4′ out from a trunk of a tree, 2-3′ out from an evergreen, shrub or perennial canopy.
